I just learned that May is National Bike Month! Here in Ocean City, NJ, bike riding is a fun and easy way to explore the island, plus get some fresh air and exercise. It is an environmentally-friendly option, as well.
The Scarborough Inn is in the perfect location for bicycling. Several rental options are close by and we are just a block and a half from the Boardwalk – a favorite place (separate from all vehicular traffic) to bike.
From June 1 to September 20 bicycling on “the Boards” is restricted to the hours between 5 AM and 12 Noon to accommodate pedestrians. We’ve learned that, especially in mid-summer, the earlier you ride on the Boardwalk, the less congestion. In some areas, there are also designated lanes for walkers, bikers, and surreys (multi-person bikes). It’s a lot of fun to bike for awhile, then take a break on one of the many benches along the Boardwalk while sipping a coffee and munching a freshly-made donut…..or maybe just “people watch.”
From the Scarborough Inn it is also easy to explore the island. There are many residential areas that are perfect for a leisurely ride with less vehicular traffic. More experienced riders could easily circumnavigate the entire island. We have Ocean City maps at the inn to help you plan your ride, just request one at the front desk.
Last year, Ocean City dedicated a designated Bike Way along Haven Avenue from 9th. Street to 34th. Street. This path connects the Transportation Center, Community Center (including the O.C. Library, Historical Museum, and Arts Center), and the Stainton Wildlife Refuge. (A large sculptural bicyclist sits at the corner of 9th. and Haven – indicating the location of the Bike Way.) You can also continue south on a shared-use road from 32nd. Street along West Avenue by utilizing a delineated bike lane.
If you are traveling with your own bicycle, the Scarborough Inn has a bike rack under the front porch for your convenience. Please supply your own bike lock.
