“Night in Venice” BOAT PARADE Sets Sail in Ocean City, NJ

The 56th annual “Night in Venice” Boat Parade is being held on Saturday, July 24, 2010 beginning at 7:30PM on the bayfront around our Ocean City, NJ island. Boat owners and waterfront home owners are invited to decorate their watercraft and homes for the occasion using this year’s theme, “Some Enchanted Evening,” or using their own theme. Guests of the Scarborough Inn B&B enjoy the parade from viewing stands erected by the city – we’ll be happy to assist with arrangements.

This waterborne parade got its start in 1954 as part of the 75th. anniversary celebration of Ocean City. Jack Jernee (Captain of the Lifeguards) and Art Watkins (Director of Public Relations at the time) were inspired to create the Ocean City Boat Parade based on an event held in Venice, Italy. The colorful lights reflecting on the water as the boats glide past make this a much-anticipated summertime event every year.

Our local OC Historical Museum, housed in the Community Center at 1735 Simpson Avenue, possesses a small collection of memorabilia related to the “Night in Venice” Boat Parade. If you visit, ask to see the Parades & Events Binder for photographs of past parades. They also have several artifacts related to the event. Admission is free, but donations are (much!) appreciated.

Scarborough Inn guests will find The “Night in Venice” Boat Parade a comfortable walk or bike ride from our central Ocean City, NJ location and a unique vacation experience!
