“…truly a clawsome event,” is how the Public Relations Office describes the 37th Annual Miss Crustacean Beauty Pageant scheduled for August 4, at 1pm on the 6th. Street Beach – just a short walk from the Scarborough Inn Bed & Breakfast. Guests of the inn can view the hermit crab contestants on their decorated floats, witness the awarding of the Cucumber Rind Cup to the Beauty Pageant Winning Crab, and listen to a rendition of the theme song, “Here It Comes, Miss Crustacean.” Sure to be a highlight of your summer seashore vacation!
But that’s not all! The Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant will be immediately followed by the equally exciting Hermit Crab Races. Early reports claim that 150 Crabathletes will participate hoping to win the coveted King of Klutz award.
Not surprisingly, U.S. News and World Report named the Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant one of the nation’s ten most unusual events and it has been featured in news articles and on television reports around the world!
A Sand Sculpting Contest is also being held on the 6th Street Beach on August 4, starting at 9am. Prizes will be awarded for all age groups.
Entry in these events is free; call the Ocean City New Jersey Public Relations Office for details (609) 525-9300 and to learn about future events like the Salt Water Taffy Sculpting Contest.
Scarborough Inn guests are invited to check the bulletin board for a Calendar of Special Events and information on regularly scheduled Activities. We are always happy to offer concierge assistance.
NOTE: Event organizers caution that Hermit Crabs are not indigenous to this area and should not be left on the beach. To learn more about HERMIT CRABS visit this link.
