I was shocked (well, maybe surprised is a more accurate depiction of my emotional state) when I read recently in a national magazine that Americans don’t picnic anymore! But upon reflection, I have to acknowledge the truth of that statement. I have to confess that I can’t remember the last time I went on a picnic. Whoops!
I think picnics are a grand idea – fresh air and sunshine, delicious food, convivial company – definitely a tradition worth reviving! So, I decided to identify 5 Great Places to Picnic in Ocean City, NJ, and invite you to enjoy a picnic next time you visit the Scarborough Inn B&B for your Jersey shore vacation.
Best Place for a Sunset Picnic – BAYSIDE CENTER – (between 5th. & 6th. Streets on Bay Avenue) The Bayside Center has a covered pavilion with picnic tables, a bathroom, and breathtaking sunset views over the bay. After your picnic, you can sit on the dock and dangle your feet over the water as you watch the setting sun slide behind the western horizon.
Best Downtown Picnic Spot – (9th. & West Avenue) – convenient to Downtown Ocean City, this little pocket park has lush plantings, a lovely fountain, and bike racks. This would be the perfect spot for an al fresco snack during a shopping excursion and is close to many restaurants that offer varied take-out options.
“Secret Garden” Picnic Spot – LAKE MEMORIAL PARK – (between 4th. & 5th. Streets on Wesley Avenue) This small gated garden was created by volunteers many years ago and has become somewhat disheveled. Despite that, it would make a quiet retreat for a picnic lunch followed by a nap on the lawn…or you could sit on one of the benches and read awhile…
Best Sunrise Picnic Spot – OCEAN CITY BEACH – (First Street & the beach) – This particular beach is near the end of the Boardwalk in a quieter location & is convenient to the First Aid Station with its water fountain and bathrooms. Arrive early and sit on the sand as you watch a magnificent sunrise while sipping a frothy latte and nibbling on a freshly-baked scone from Who’s On First @ 100 Asbury Avenue. Morning bliss!
Best Picnic Spot to Reach by Bike – CORSON’S INLET STATE PARK – (bisected by scenic Ocean Drive / Route 619 connecting Ocean City and Strathmere) Corson’s Inlet is about 300 acres of unspoiled and undeveloped beachfront on the southern tip of the island. It is easily reached via the Ocean City Bike Way (or by car) and is perfect for a picnic – followed by some sunbathing and wading in the ocean. Remember to carry out your trash to help maintain the pristine nature of the park.
