Autumn Gardening at the Scarborough Inn

“Oh, I don’t like Mums,” a guest commented as she observed us removing the overgrown annuals from the front flowerbed at the inn.

“Well, it’s not the Mums,” she clarified, “it’s that summer will soon be over.”

And, of course, it will soon officially be Autumn. But like all seasons, Autumn will arrive slowly and in fits and starts. Last week we had temperatures in the 90s. Today, it is a much more comfortable 80-degrees with cooler temperatures predicted for the evenings. This is glorious weather for a Jersey Shore vacation and many visitors also enjoy the quieter pace of the “shoulder season.”

Yesterday, we visited a farmer’s market and filled the back of the van with beautiful Mums in shades of rich ruby and vibrant mauve. This morning we removed the overgrown annuals and perennials. It so happens that guests were visiting who are horticulturists and they asked if they could have the plants we were removing from the front flower bed. We are delighted to contribute plants to their garden project and thrilled that Scarborough Inn flowers will live on in a new home.

Now, the front flower bed looks neat, weed-free, and freshly adorned with Mums that complement the Victorian paint colors on the Scarborough Inn’s facade. We also trimmed the flowers in the Rose Garden and tended the Patio Garden, too.

As Summer drifts away, we can anticipate the delights of Autumn for…”to everything there is a season, and a time…”

Enjoy the “shoulder season” at the Scarborough Inn Bed & Breakfast; we look forward to welcoming you soon!
