The Wetlands Institute, in nearby Stone Harbor, NJ, is just about 25 miles from the Scarborough Inn and a wonderful place to discover the natural charms of the shore environment!

Combining “education and entertainment”, The Wetlands Institute features a variety of exhibits, interactive displays, and experiences of interest to all ages…and available in all seasons (although offerings do vary). Enjoy gardens that contain native plants, carefully selected to attract birds and butterflies. View exhibits that focus on local wildlife like the Diamondback Terrapin, Fiddler Crabs, and a variety of shore birds. Spot migratory birds from the Observation Tower and interact with live animals, too.
There’s also a selection of special events like photography workshops, lectures, and guided tours – some on the Salt Marsh Trail. Here you’ll experience the vital wetlands biome up close.
One of my favorite exhibits is the “Osprey Cam” which focuses its lens on a nest site. This can be visited any time via the Internet connection, but it may not always be “occupied.” Check back often to see an osprey family live – truly a natural wonder!
Visit the Wetlands Institute during your next Jersey Shore getaway at the Scarborough Inn. This Google MAP takes you to Stone Harbor via the Garden State Parkway (south).
