The Ocean City Boardwalk is just a 5-minute stroll from the Scarborough Inn and it is the focus of an amazing variety of activities! Think “boardwalk” and you may think about enjoying a walk along the wooden way in the evening or taking the children to “the rides.” And, of course, you can do those things, but there’s much more besides.

For example, early in the morning the Ocean City boardwalk is a popular site for exercise – walking, jogging, and bicycle riding are great ways to start the day. Sometimes there are exciting races to participate in…or to watch. Guests of the Scarborough Inn can rent bicycles (just round the corner) and bike alongside the Atlantic Ocean on a beautiful sunny morning. Great view…fun exercise!
During the hours that Jersey Shore vacationers are enjoying the beach, the boardwalk can get hot. However, it’s always a great location for a break from the sand, lunch or a snack, or the source of diversions like sand toys, a book, or suntan lotion. In August, the boardwalk hosts the annual Boardwalk Art Show – a wonderful display and sale of original artwork in a variety of styles and mediums.
At all times of the day, the boardwalk provides a little “retail therapy” for all ages and interests. And if anyone needs a respite from shopping, there are convenient benches and shaded pavilions for that purpose.

It is always the site for treats like pizza; frozen custard, ice cream or gelato; French fries or onion rings; hamburgers, hoagies, and hot dogs…oh my! Then there’s salt water taffy, creamy fudge, caramel popcorn and much more besides (are you drooling yet?). There are several casual restaurants on the boardwalk that offer meals with a great view of the boardwalk or ocean, too.
In the evening, the boardwalk is a favored destination for amusement rides, mini golf, or just a cooling evening stroll. It is also the site for movie theaters and a wide range of concerts, craft fairs, and special events (like the Miss NJ Pageant) – most housed in the historic Music Pier. Then there are parades on the boardwalk (featuring cars, pageant queens, and babies), Family Fun Nights, and spectacular fireworks displays on holidays or special occasions.

During “shoulder season” the boardwalk takes on an entirely different aspect…quieter and more serene with lovely vistas of the beach and Atlantic Ocean or austere and elegant when covered with glistening snow. Whatever the season, the Ocean City boardwalk is a charming and diverting destination for all!
A recent article by Ocean City PATCH informs us that the boardwalk Is not quite 5 miles long as was generally believed, “…the round trip is really only 4.9 miles. The Boardwalk is 2.45 miles long.” Whoops!
