|Pickleball? None of the Above!|
“What is Pickleball?” you may be asking. And you would not be alone; many people are not familiar with this new game. But the fact is that pickleball is gaining in popularity and that it arrived In Ocean City in the summer of 2011 with the addition of courts near the Civic Center on 6th. Street.
The story goes that pickleball was invented by a family because they wanted a game to play together that would allow the participation of family members of all ages and ability levels. The new sport was named for the family’s Cocker Spaniel, Pickles, who apparently liked the game, too!
The USA Pickleball Association website describes the game as follows; “Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball (similar to a Whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.”
Gus took a few lessons and has played the game. He reports that pickleball is challenging, fast-paced, and a lot of fun!
It is such a new sport, that I was unable to find a photo of the paddle, the court, or players in action! So, next time you visit Ocean City, you can stop by the court and observe a game of pickleball for yourself! Or you can watch the video on the USAPA website.
Innsider Tip: The new Pickleball courts are on 6th. Street, near the Boardwalk, and less than a 10-minute walk from the Scarborough Inn.
