Planning a family vacation to Ocean City – “America’s Greatest Family Resort” ? There’s so much to do with children – of all ages, interests, and abilities – so I thought I might start a series of posts on child-friendly activities and special events for Scarborough Inn guests and other Jersey Shore vacationers.

BEACH & BOARDWALK –
When visiting the island, it’s natural to think of our award-winning Beach and Boardwalk as locations for family fun…and they are excellent forms of entertainment. The Scarborough Inn is just about 5-minutes walk from both. We offer the complimentary use of 2 Beach Tags per guest room (with a refundable deposit) and we have a Bathhouse for our guests’ use, too, so enjoying the beach is convenient and easy! (Please remember to swim at guarded beaches!)
The Boardwalk offers food & treats, amusement rides, miniature golf, shopping, entertainment, and special events like concerts, parades, and “street” performers. Early in the day, bike along the “wooden way” for spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean combined with family-friendly exercise in the fresh sea air. Daytime or night time, the boardwalk offers diversions for everyone – or a comfortable bench for people-watching. The Travel Channel recently named the Ocean City Boardwalk one of the BEST in the US!

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT –
The seashore is a unique environment and children may enjoy learning about the fascinating plants and animals found at the Jersey Shore. There are books on local subjects and/or by local authors (try SunRose Words & Music, 756 Asbury Avenue). The Discovery Seashell Museum (2721 Asbury Avenue) features just what you’d expect – coral, shark jaws, jewelry-making supplies, and shells from around the world!
Another experience that is fun and educational is a Guided Beach Walk – conducted during the heart of the summer season. Knowledgeable guides lead walks on the northern and southern ends of the island introducing visitors to our unique natural habitat and some of its inhabitants. Nature walks offer families another way to explore the shore (adults $1.00; children $.50).
The Bayside Center at 520 Bay Avenue is located in a former private home overlooking the bay on the western side of the island. It houses exhibits, a live “osprey cam,” and classes for children in environmental studies and sailing. The Waterfront Park & Marina is located at 2nd Street and Bay Avenue and is primarily for the purpose of providing boatslips for transient boaters. However, it is also available for “passive recreation” like picnics or watching the sunset over the bay – an awesome experience! The Bayside Center and Waterfront Marina give families access to the bay side of island living – don’t miss it!
During you Ocean City vacation, why not create Nature Journals with children!
