The Scarborough Inn is surrounded by small gardens that feature lovely annual flowers that bloom all summer and by perennial plantings that we eagerly anticipate and enjoy during their short, but spectacular, growing season.

Annual flowers usually include impatiens and pansies because they thrive in the seashore environment.  Plus, they are available in shades that complement the heritage paint colors that have been used on our historic bed and breakfast!

Perennial flowers have a brief period of flowering – and are, therefore, eagerly anticipated and enjoyed while they last.  These include azaleas, lilacs, iris (in several varieties and multiple colors), and peonies, to name a few.

Roses used to be considered a “June flower,” but with today’s re-blooming varieties – we can enjoy them several times between spring and fall.  Right now, coral and red roses are blooming around the archway near the front walk and pale pink climbers twine up trellises next to the parking lot.

Hanging plants – this year Boston ferns – adorn the 100-foot wraparound porch and the patio garden area.  It’s always fun to see if these plants will be selected as nesting sites for songbird pairs.  That frequently happens – giving guests an opportunity to witness the first, tentative flight of this year’s baby birds!

Recently, I saw an interesting post about making a “rain garden” on a site call WILD NEW JERSEY. See the link below and consider following this fascinating blog, too.
